Frequently Asked Questions
Compilations provide no assurance—the accountant presents information in financial statement format without verifying it. Reviews provide limited assurance through inquiries and analytical procedures. Reviews require independence; compilations generally don't (with disclosure if not independent).
Under SSAE, examinations provide reasonable (positive) assurance through extensive procedures similar to an audit. Reviews provide limited (negative) assurance through inquiry and analytical procedures. Agreed-upon procedures provide no assurance—just factual findings.
AUP engagements involve performing specific procedures agreed to by the engaging party and specified users. The practitioner reports findings without expressing assurance. Users draw their own conclusions. The report is restricted to parties who agreed to the procedures.
Independence is required for: audits, examinations, reviews (both SSAE and SSARS). Independence is NOT required for compilations (but lack of independence must be disclosed) or agreed-upon procedures. However, the accountant must always maintain integrity and objectivity.
